Standing Still: An "Orange is the New Black" Fan Zine
What can I say about Netflix's "Orange is the New Black"? I love this show so much I wanted to curate and design a fan zine for it, so I did. With some help from my two illustration friends Reina and Jessica, we got the word out and collected a few "OITNB" inspired illustrations for our zine. Hope you enjoy:
(click the zine above to embiggen OR view the zine here on ISSUU).
Above is my portrait of "Miss Claudette", a very misunderstood character from the show, as well as some spots and a repeat pattern I created for the zine.
Special thanks to everyone who contributed
AND
thanks to Reina for the amazing cover image and title design!
"The Tale of Hot Dog and His Missing Green Shirt"
This past month I started volunteering with a wonderful organization called Big Class, an organization that supports young writers and storytellers in New Orleans. In Big Class we create in-school programs and projects (like this Animal Origin Stories book) as well as projects in the St. Claude Big Class studio.
For "The Tale of Hot Dog and His Missing Green Shirt", Big Class invited 2nd graders from Sylvanie Williams College Prep to help the Big Classmates finish a book on a tight deadline!
That afternoon the 2nd graders helped us create a whole book from scratch. While the kids were shouting ideas I was busy sketching down ideas for their characters and environment. The main character ended up being a grouchy dog, named Hot Dog, who lived behind a movie theater. Supporting characters are a raccoon, rat, cat, and skunk.
After the main story line and characters were created, the students then received blank paper to write their own ending and draw their own concluding illustration!
Each student received their own copy of the book the following week.
Here are three of the final illustrations and a pattern made from the initial sketches:
Working with Big Class is always a blast!! It was crazy fun for me to record the 2nd graders insane ideas and fun for the students to have a "real professional artist" in the studio to work with them.
The Art House Co-op's Sketchbook Project 2014 Tour
I got to check out my sketchbook yesterday morning at the Crescent City Farmer's market! The Sketchbook Project is traveling around the U.S. and was in New Orleans this weekend. See if my sketchbook "This List" is coming to a city near you.
I had such a blast looking through everyone's work! My absolute favorite was a sketchbook filled with rainbows, sunshine, and apple trees! This is definitely something you won't want to miss. Just in case the tour isn't coming to a city near you I uploaded most of my sketchbook to ISSUU, check it out below!
A National Parenting Media Association win!
I landed my very first published editorial illustration my senior year in college through a class called "Getting Published". The publication was baystateparent magazine and the article was about summer camps and bed bugs! This project was an amazing opportunity that I learned so much from; I really needed a legit "real illustration world" experience before leaving school.
Earlier this month baystateparent went to the National Parenting Media Association convention. They also brought along my "bedbugs" illustration with them and submitted it to the "Editorial and Design Competition". I was thrilled when Paula Ethier, the art director of the piece, emailed me saying we came in second place!
I am so proud that my first published editorial illustration has been so well received. I'm also proud that first published illustration was with a magazine as wonderful as baystatepatent!
Thanks again and again to Paula! And congrats to the baystateparent team!
If I Ever Cease to Love: Storyville Apparel Collaboration
Everybody has their favorite Mardi Gras throw; whether it's a custom designed shoe from Muses, a glittery Zulu coconut, or shiny doubloons. I've always been a fan of the signature beads that are thrown during the Rex parade that rolls on Mardi Gras day. I chose to design these classic beads as a symbol of my love for the city and for carnival. I call it "If I Ever Cease to Love". (Read about the song here.)
Mardi Gras has got to be one of my favorite holidays. It's always been a huge deal in my family and for years I've always looked forward to the king cake, marching bands, costumes, and fun.
This year is the first year since 2009 that I've been able to attend Carnival in New Orleans! (While I was at school in Savannah I was unable to make trips home because of the distance and amounts of work I had to do!)
I was so happy to have gotten this opportunity to work with such a wonderful company and to see my design produced and sold in New Orleans, a city I love with all my heart!
2013 Year in Review
Inspired by my friend Sara’s posts, I decided to do my own summary of art for the year. And what a good year it’s been!
Thanks to everyone who’s been a friend and supporter all these years, especially this year. Thank you all and I wish you the best in 2014!
Light Grey Art Lab "6 Degrees"
Sharing art with total strangers is such a wonderful thing... and this month I had the opportunity to share with over 80 artists from around the world.
The way this was possible was through the “6 Degrees” postcard show at Light Grey Art Lab! It’s been about 6 months since I’ve done a show and I was SO excited to see my name listed with the other amazing artists selected for the show.
Some of my friends from SCAD were also in the show, it was fun to critique our pieces with each other. In the end we all created a limited edition of 100 prints; our first edition was hung in Light Grey Art Lab's gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I also got a package from the gallery containing one of every artist’s postcard! A lot of the pieces are hand pulled serigraphs, which is something really special.
You can still see all of our hard work on display at Light Grey Art Lab! The show will be on display from now until January 17th.
Thanks again and again to all the wonderful people at LGAL and all the talented artists who make beautiful work and inspire me to do better everyday.
They Draw and Cook!
Last month our Quick Draw challenge was to create and upload a recipe to the popular illustration/food website "They Draw and Cook". I chose to do a delicious adult drink for the holidays called "Starry Starry Cider":
This week Salli and Nate (the lovely couple who runs the website) decided to feature our submissions on their main jumbotron!
Click here to see our recipes on the homepage-- thru December 16th!
Thanks Salli and Nate!
